Should you shave your head if balding?
This is a question that many men ask themselves at the first signs of balding. Shaving your head should be a decision that you make with or without hair.
In fact, you should consider shaving your hair as just another way to express your own personal style.
By the end of this post I will show you how having a shaved head makes you look younger.
However, if you’ve never shaved your head before, it can seem a bit drastic.
If you have the foresight to look at your own hair loss and balding as well as those of your immediate and extended family, you may have come to the conclusion that it might be your fate as well.
Once you do, then I would seriously consider shaving your head if your balding.
Your hair is just beginning to recede. Maybe it’s getting a little thin on top but you’re not quite losing it at a rapid rate.
Now is the time to start getting your haircut shorter, than just shaving it if you’re balding. This way, even if balding is your fate, you’re least giving yourself some time to adjust without hair.
By getting your haircut shorter and shorter you will come to get used to your look with less and less hair. You can do this in advance and without it being forced upon you by mother nature. You can also slow down your hair loss with Minoxidil and Propecia. But these are only stop-gap measures and shouldn’t be used as a crutch. Minoxidil and Propecia should be used to help your translation into your eventual life without hair.
Shave your head and look younger
Ironically for bald men, hair loss and balding have all been associated with old men. This makes logical sense of course because the majority of old men have experienced balding and hair loss to one extent or another.
In addition, it’s no surprise that balding and hair loss is one of the first signs of getting old and of our own mortality.
So it’s funny to think how shaving your head, when it’s often associated with old age, can actually make you look younger. Why is this?
The answer is simple. It’s the difference between being bald and balding. Balding looks old, but a shaved head actually looks young.
Make sure you keep that bald head and the rest of your skin protected from the sun while looking young with some moisturizers and sunblocks.
Think back to when you were a child. Many parents cut their kids hair short, even giving them crewcuts when you are very young to save on time and trips to the barber, where they often get restless. Most babies are born bald.
Most young children nowadays, boys in particular, have short hair. Some still get crew cuts for the summer. That’s one reason why shaving your head makes you look younger.
Another reason why shaving your head makes you look younger is that it’s a little more difficult to tell that you are balding.
In fact, the closer you shave your head to the skin, the less lines of demarcation on your scalp. Which means less of a contrast between where you are actually balding and where you are not.
It’s almost like hiding in plain sight.
How do I look good with a shaved head?
Looking good with a shaved head can be simple, but like most things in life, simple does not necessarily equate to easy.
However, with the right steps you will not only look good bald but you will look fantastic bald.
Actually, shaving your head will give you an entirely new look. Many men, especially those who have more effeminate features, find that shaving their head makes them look good.
It simply adds a more masculine edge to their facial features. It’s indeed a good balance.
Furthermore, once you shave your head, you will never have to worry about going bald again. This is because you will have confronted your balding head on, accepted it and embraced it.
This will give you a new level of confidence that you otherwise wouldn’t have had, had you remained in a state of thinning hair, comb overs, cover-ups and other things you used in your denial stage.
When you make the decision to shave your head, the next step you need to take is to take a good hard look at your current physical shape and fitness level. More accurately, “Are you in good shape?”
Perhaps you’re not.
Perhaps you’re carrying a few extra pounds. Maybe in your state of denial you were too preoccupied trying to save your hair and the perception of losing your youth that you neglected a more important part of looking good.
That is not trying to stay young, but staying in shape.
Being in and staying in good shape should be a part of every man’s life. Whether they have a full, thick head of hair or as bald as a cue ball.
However, many of us, as we get older, neglect this fact. Ironically again, the men who neglect this fact more often than not are the guys with thick, full heads of hair. Why is that?
Those guys with full heads of hair think that’s the main source of their attractiveness.
Whereas men who are balding, are more self-conscious about their appearance and their ability to attract the opposite sex.
Therefore, if you feel that you’ve let yourself go, the first thing you need to look at is your diet. Are you eating too much junk? Are you eating too much in general?
Look at your diet, what you eat and how much you eat. Then start making changes. There is plenty of information out there on how to do this.
The next thing to consider is your physique, your shape. How is it? Do you get out of breath just walking up a flight of stairs? Do you strain lifting even the lightest of objects?
I might be exaggerating with these questions, but muscle is key for a man. In fact, once you get some control over your diet, you will hopefully begin losing some excess body fat.
Diet, while at the same time you should also be focused on building some muscle. The combination of burning the fat off whilst building muscle, even slightly can do wonders for your physique and symmetry.
Having good symmetry will be key when looking good with a shaved head, as we will go through this more below.
So my advice would either be, join a gym or begin resistance training at home with kettle bells, a good suspension trainer, resistance bands along with push-ups, planks and pull-ups. The key is to building muscle is working against heavy resistance.
What does a shaved head say about you?
A shaved head says a lot about a person. First, if you’ve never shaved your head before, you will feel open and exposed to the world. You see, especially if you’ve been balding for a while, you’ve probably been in that state of denial.
So what do you men do when they’re balding and in a state of denial? They resort to ways of making the current hairline and overall hair coverage thicker.
Many go to great expense to thicken their hair nowadays. They begin with thickening shampoos and conditioners.
Then move onto serums and thickening gels. When their hair loss seems to be increasing, they turn to Minoxidil and Propecia.
Finally, many men resort hair transplants and other more invasive procedures to save their increasingly thinning locks.
My point is, all the while when they are doing this, they are usually trying to cover their existing hair with either intricate comb-overs or maybe even weaves.
During this time the subconscious mind will always be self-conscious about what’s on top of their heads.
They’ll be constantly hiding or trying to hide their balding. Will be insecure and looks of frustration as well as anxiety will be written all over their faces, whether they know it or not.
You’ve probably experienced it yourself. I’m sure you’ve seen it in others.
However, once you shave your head, all that’s gone. It feels like someone has taken off all your clothes and thrown you out in the street.
Maybe not that drastic, but it’ll be a similar feeling. Open and exposed for the whole world to see.
That’s why it might be a good idea for you shave your head with someone you trust and is supportive or would be supportive. Have them be the first ones to see you with a shaved head. You don’t need it, but it could help.
Even if you don’t have someone supportive, it won’t matter. Because during your stages of denial, everyone knew what you we’re trying to hide, your balding.
In fact, many of the reactions, I would say at least most of them, will be quite supportive.
They’ll be thumbs up. People will think “Finally the guy had a look at himself in the mirror and admitted he was balding.”
So what your shaved head says about you, is that you are confident in who you are and don’t give a s*** about what other people think.
Let me tell you something, there’s nothing sexier to the opposite sex than confidence.
How can a bald head look smart?
Now that you’ve shaved your head bald, perhaps you’re looking for a new style. This is a great time to experiment.
Maybe you want to look smart with that new bald head look. One of the best ways to do this is to dress smart. A nice colored shirt, khaki trousers.
Blazers always look smart as well. Good shoes, which are well kept, also look smart. To top it off, nothing screams smart like a bald man with a shaved head in a pair of eyeglasses.
Just see my post on “How to rock the bald with glasses look” or Google “bald man glasses” and you’ll get all kinds of looks for inspiration.
Even if you have perfect vision, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a smart pair of eyeglasses to make you new bald head look smart.
To get the best pair of eyeglasses for your new shaved head is to go to an eyeglasses retailer.

Bald fashion tips
Once you’ve shaved your head and have an exercise and diet routine, the next thing to consider is your personal style and clothing.
I would use clothes and fashion as an added incentive to help keep you on the straight and narrow in regards to your diet and physical fitness routine.
Once you lose a few pounds and on your way, here are some bald fashion tips to get you started.
First, I would begin looking at pictures and photos of all the bald men whom you admire. Look at their style and clothing. Which one of these bald style icons would you like to receive fashion tips from?
There are many different styles in fashion for bald men. You have to choose one that best suits your lifestyle.
- Are you very athletic and sporty?
- Dressy?
- How old are you?
- Are you younger or older?
Always try to dress your age.
Don’t try to dress younger than you are.
Although shaving your head will definitely help you look younger, it’s not an excuse to dress like an 18-year-old if you are 38 or 48.
How a bald man should dress
There is no special dress code. How a bald man should dress is basically up to the individual bald man himself. We are all unique.
Whether we have hair or are completely bald. However, no matter what kind of man you are, you should always dress with style and class.
Always strive to wear the very best. What is the best? Classics like crafted, goodyear soled shoes and clothing made of the highest quality fabrics.
Trendy were great when you were younger and experimenting, however, classic and timeless styles are what you should be after once you have matured.
In fact, even if you were younger, having a few high quality garments will always be in style. The fit. Your clothes shouldn’t be too tight or too baggy.
To help you out in this department, Tailors are worth their weight in gold, if you can find the right one.
As I mentioned previously you should look at some of the bald icons whom you admire for fashion tips.
How do you cover a shaved head?
Brass tax, a shaved head should never be covered. It should be embraced and shown off to the world. I mean, you’ve gone through the trouble of accepting your baldness and shaving your head.
Why would you want to cover it all up?
However headwear is a great way for bald men to accessorize and accent their individuality.
The key is doing it right.
Doing it right means wearing headwear when it’s appropriate, not just for the sake of covering your bald head. In fact there’s even a term for it it’s called “hatfishing”.
However, there are times where hats are more than appropriate, There are basically three situations where you’ll want to wear a hat. They are:
- To protect your head from the sun.
- To keep your head warm when it’s cold out.
- To keep it dry when it’s raining and you don’t want to carry an umbrella.
These are the situations when you should cover your head.
You can use these occasions, when a bald head should be covered, as a way of accentuating your personal style.
Along with a great pair of shoes, there’s no better way to personalize your style than with some cool hats.
Depending on how risk taking or even eccentric you want to be with you new bald head, you may want to have a variety of headwear.
Should bald guys wear hats?
As I said above, you should wear hats when there is a legitimate reason to wear one, not to hide your head.
Check out my post, “Hats for bald men. How to wear them in style!“.
Personally, I would try to stay away from baseball hats.
However, if you must, there are some pretty cool and stylish baseball style caps, especially in black, that look cool with a leather jacket.
Although you should avoid baseball hats with team logos on them, you’re not a 10-year-old.
The only exception to this is, if you’re a fan of certain sports teams and you’re going to go out the stadium dressed in other regalia, then maybe that would be the exception.
However, in everyday life I would not advise it. You will just look like an overgrown 10 year old, no matter how much you will want to self justify.
Personally, I like the old style newsboy caps. There are some really great ones made of 100% wool by Stetson. They look really stylish.
Whether you have an overcoat on or even a sport coat. There’s nothing that dresses up an outfit like a stylish newsboy cap, old school.
Please note: That you should never wear a hat inside. Always take it off when entering a building. It’s not only the right etiquette, but looks cool too.
Get a tan!
Nothing can shave a few years off a man while adding a youthful color to his skin than getting a great tan.
But, there’s no need to burn your skin, frying out in the sun turning you into a red lobster.
With high quality self-tanners on the market, there’s no need even for the sun.
How do you wear balding?
As you can see gentleman, how you wear your balding is totally a personal and individualistic endeavor.
But wear your balding with class. Use this opportunity to upgrade and evolve your style.
Because nothing is more masculine than a shaved head man. So wear your balding with pride and confidence.
Because wearing your baldness with pride and confidence is the best attire a man can have.
