How can you make a bald head look less shiny?
Wash gently, use a moisturizer if your scalp needs one, and compare the finish of your sunscreen. Blot surface oil lightly when needed. A matte look is a cosmetic preference; trying to strip away all oil or skipping sun protection can leave your scalp uncomfortable and exposed.
First work out what you are seeing. Shine can come from skin oil, sweat or product residue. A smooth, closely shaved surface also reflects light, so a bright overhead lamp can make the same scalp look shinier than it does in ordinary daylight.
A simple routine for less visible shine
- Wash gently. Use a mild cleanser and rinse it off. Hard scrubbing and repeated washing can irritate skin.
- Pat dry. Use a clean, soft towel without rubbing, especially after exercise.
- Choose moisture for comfort. If your scalp feels dry or tight, try a light moisturizer. Change one product at a time to compare the finish.
- Protect exposed skin. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and water-resistant sunscreen as labeled, and use a hat or shade where practical. Apply sunscreen before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours outdoors, after the label’s swimming or sweating interval, and immediately after towel drying. - Blot lightly when needed. Press a clean blotting sheet or soft tissue against surface oil. If you remove sunscreen while blotting or wiping, reapply before further sun exposure.
There is no need to exfoliate every day or shave more often to force a matte finish. Avoid scrubbing freshly shaved, cut or irritated skin.
