Why should bald guys get a tan?
As a bald guy, especially for those of you who shave your head bald, you’ll soon come to realize that many times your bald head becomes the centre of attention. Especially, if you have just shaved it for the first time. I’ve mentioned this before, but having a shaved head accentuates your overall appearance. What better way to accentuate that shaved head than getting a tan. But, you need to do it right or else you may end up looking like a Rock Lobster.
When you accentuate your appearance, especially by doing something as profound as shaving your head, you’ll want to optimize every part of your appearance.
This comes down to of course, getting in better shape, possibly updating your wardrobe or simply redoing your image. However, that newly shaved head of yours also needs to be taken care of.
After all, it’s the one part of your appearance now, that is central to accentuating your overall image. This requires you, of course, to take care of that newly shaved head of yours.
This includes shaving it on a regular basis, keeping it washed, exfoliated, moisturized and protected from the sun’s harmful UVA rays.
However, there are other ways we can use to help make the most out of that newly shaved head of ours. These include keeping a healthy glow and color to it.
If you’re a white guy or have a pale complexion, especially if you have a pale complexion, a healthy tan could actually look good on you.
Besides, most of us do want to look more athletic and healthy looking. Getting a tan can do wonders not only for your bald head, but your overall skin tone as well.
Becoming one or two shades darker with a healthy tan can totally upgrade your image.
In this post I’m going to discuss all the aspects of tanning for men who shave their heads. You’ll learn all you need to know in order to get that healthy tan on that newly shaved head of yours.
How to add color to a bald head.
The best way to color your bald head would be to tan it. However, I do not recommend lying out in the sun for hours on end frying yourself like a rock lobster. Nor do I recommend tanning beds.
Tanning beds and booths seem to miss a few sections of your head while you’re lying or even standing up in them.
The light those tanning lamps emit are never of one uniform strength. The strength of the tanning beds lamps depends on of course the quality of the lamps and their BTU strengths as well as the positions and angles.
But no matter how good of a tanning bed you may lie in, they will never get your head a nice uniform tan.
There’s actually only one way to do this safely and with a much better, more natural color than either flying yourself outside at the beach or lying in a tanning bed. That is of course using a high quality, all natural self tanner.
There are high quality self tanners you can get which do an excellent job. So just pick one and get a pair of self tanner application mitts while you’re at it.
The self tanner mitts will protect your hands from unnecessary exposure to the self-tanner.
If you use a self tanner without a mitt you just need to remember to wash it off immediately afterwards.
This is your best defense against tanning your palms and your fingertips.
But just play it safe and grab a pair of tanning mitts and you’re good to go
Mens tanning lotion options.
Perhaps you feel that tanning lotions are more for women than for a manly man. Maybe you’ve used tanning lotions which have a perfumy or feminine scent.
So what can you do as a man who wants to add some healthy color to his skin, but doesn’t want to go out smelling like a perfumery?
Well, there are some men’s tanning lotions which have other scents that don’t smell like women’s perfume. They’re also unisex tanning lotions which come unscented that you might want to try.
In any case, you don’t have to worry because there are definitely tanning lotions that are very suitable for men to use without smelling like you get out of a beauty parlor or will save you the embarrassment of walking around with a pink and womanly colored tanning lotion container.
Do tanning lotions really work?
Tanning lotions really do work. In fact, it’s my preferred method of tanning and I’ll tell you why.
First off, it’s just not worth it to fry yourself out at the beach or by the pool for hours on end.
Let’s face it, I don’t care how dark your skin is, you’re going to get sunburned.
Actually, you must get a little sunburned before the melanin in your skin begins to do its magic and changes color to that tan you’re seeking.
Even with sun protection and sun block, you are still laying in the sun exposed to those harmful UV rays.
Not to mention the time wasted in doing so, although it can also be quite relaxing as well. But I’d rather be swimming in a pool or in the sea than just lying on the beach baking in the sun.
If you don’t live near the beach or it’s winter, then what’s the next best thing? Well, tanning salons of course.
Tanning salons are a huge multi-million dollar business and I’m sure you have a local tanning salon near you.
However, tanning salons also have their drawbacks.
One of them of course, are the rays that those tanning bed lamps emit. They’re definitely not good for your skin and after a few years of it, you may end up looking like a worn out leather bag.
Let’s not forget, those lamps actually miss parts of your body. It’s virtually impossible for any tanning bed or whether it’s a bed or even a stand-up tanning booth to tan all the areas evenly.
Besides, some lamps are older than others. Other lamps are smaller or positioned in angles which just don’t get you that all around color you’re looking for.
Don’t forget those ridiculous goggles, which are very necessary that you need to wear to protect your eyes from those harmful rays those tanning bulbs emit. You end up walking out looking like a raccoon.
So the next best thing of course are tanning lotions. Tanning lotions really do work nowadays. They’ve come a long way since the orange colors that they used to leave behind.
In fact, nowadays, many tanning lotions give you a great bronze skin tone.
Actually, many come in different shades of tan. You can get darker or lighter shades.
Some tanning lotions nowadays even come as gradual lotions, meaning you apply the tanning lotion it gradually tans you over time.
Premium tanning lotions are actually good for your skin as well and include natural ingredients and contain vitamins and other nutrients which help nourish the skin while tanning it.
So save yourself the aggravation and get yourself a high quality tanning lotion.
Nowadays, they can’t be beat.
What is the best self tanner?
There are a number of self tanners on the market today. It can be quite hard to decide and discern which is the best one for you.
In my opinion, the best self tanners are made from the highest quality, all-natural ingredients.
In fact, the best self tanners not only give you a natural looking tan, but are also good for your skin. The best self tanners actually contain vitamins and minerals that help nourish the skin like a good lotion does.
Not only do the help nourish and moisturize the skin, but many of them also contain sunblock or an SPF protection.
This not only helps you you darken your skin, but you can actually go out in the sun with a tan, while protecting your skin against harmful UVA rays at the same time.
However, you also have to be aware of poor quality self tanners and bronzers that are on the market today. Many of these will turn your skin orange instead of a great natural looking tan.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t think many people in this world want to turn the skin tone the color orange, do you? Well, maybe some do.
Therefore, to avoid the cheap, low quality self tanners that make you look orange, you’ll want to get the highest quality self tanners and bronzers available on the market today.
Believe me, they are well worth the little extra money you may pay when you compare high quality self tanners to lower quality self tanners, especially for your skin.
To be quite honest, that highest quality self tanners and bronzers don’t really cost all that much compared to what you receive in return.
Can your scalp tan?
Absolutely! Your scalp can tan just like any other part of your skin. It contains the same melanin and other characteristics that naturally cause your skin to darken as a way of protecting it against the sun’s rays.
However, unlike other parts of your body, your scalp is the most exposed to the sun.
In fact, if you walk around outside regardless of season, your head will get more exposed to the sun than any other part of your skin.
That being said, it’s quite easy for your scalp to actually tan because your skin will adjust accordingly to the strength of the UVA rays on any particular day.
However, your newly shaved head also brings about certain risks to it like overexposure to the sun, which can result in sunburns and premature aging of the skin, not to mention skin cancer.
That is why it is vital for you to wear sunblock on your head.
Putting on sunblock or sun lotion or any lotion which contains an SPF factor should be a part of your daily bald head maintenance routine.
The good news is that you can actually get a great natural tan on your head along with the SPF factors of using a sunblock.
Whether you use a high quality self tanner/bronzer containing an SPF or you use a high quality self bronzer in combination with a high-quality SPF. Either way, you’re killing two birds with one stone.
Keeping your skin healthy and protected from the sun’s harmful UVA rays, which will prevent premature aging and other skin issues caused by overexposure to the sun.
All that while getting and maintaining a great tan and healthy skin color. Both, a winning combination.
How do you keep a bald head from shining?
To keep a bald head from shining you need to keep your bald head free of excess oil and sebum. Excess oil and sebum can build up as a result of not properly keeping your head washed and clean.
In fact, having a proper and regular skincare and grooming routine should also be part of your bald head maintenance routine.
This also includes exfoliating your bald head on a regular basis, a couple times a week should be fine for most guys.
I have a whole blog post on exfoliating a bald head, which you can read. But actually, it’s quite easy and will only take you a few minutes, a couple times a week.
Exfoliating your head will do more than just keep excess oil from building up as well as sebum. The benefits also include healthier looking skin as well as preventing razor bumps and ingrown hairs from forming.
Any guy who shaves his face on a regular basis knows that ingrown hairs and razor bumps can be very nasty.
But just a few minutes a week can prevent a whole host of issues while keeping your skin looking great, fresh and clean. This goes for that bald head of yours too.
If you’re a man who has natural oily skin you may need to do a little extra. This may require applying a bald head matte lotion or simple a shine reducer.
Reducers and matte lotions are excellent at keeping that shine not only off the skin on your face but also keeping that bald head shine free as well.
There are many excellent matte lotions and shine reducers on the market today. Many of them also contain sunblock and SPF protection.
How can I get tan fast?
The fastest, easiest and safest way to get a tan is to use a high quality self tanner or bronzer.
With so many on the market why waste hours of your day driving to a beach laying out under the sun, constantly applying sunblock with risking having it wash off every time you go and take a dip in the ocean or the lake.
It’s just so much easier to simply take a few minutes and apply something like a self tanner or bronzer.
Not only that, but you get a great looking sun tan without having to lay out in the sun for hours.
You also save yourself from having to constantly keep your skin moisturized in order to keep it from flaking.
Besides, for all that effort “suntans” don’t even last that long. Perhaps a week at most and it depends of course on your own skin complexion and how much exposure you had.
Getting a so-called all natural tan takes a lot of work. However, the worst part of that all natural tanning process is all that wasted time and risks you take in doing so.
Do yourself a favor and get a fast and healthier tan by using a high quality self tanner or bronzer.
These are not only made from high quality ingredients, vitamins and minerals that will give you a great all natural looking tan, but they’ll also protect and nourish your skin at the same time.
It’s a win-win situation and why anyone and everyone doesn’t use self tanners and bronzers is beyond me. I guess some people like walking around looking like rock lobster.
Should you shower right after tanning?
If you are using a self bronzer or tanner, you should always read the instructions first as to when taking a shower or going for a swim, etc. is appropriate.
Usually there is a waiting period in order to let the self tanner or bronzer fully do its magic. That could be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour up, maybe a little longer depending on the product.
So always read the instructions for best use.
Tanning a pale bald head.
Most men, especially those of us with quite fair in complexion, always look a little healthier and more athletic with some extra skin color.
However, there are some exceptions, actually, when a pale bald head looks great.
If you have clear, smooth skin it can be greatly accentuated if that skin is coupled with very dark features like darker eyebrows and eyelashes along with blue or green eyes.
Having a great white smile also tops it off, although, a great smile looks, well, great on everybody.
Unlike my opinion on matching your skin tone closer to your hair color helps make your hair look thicker.
Whereas, if you have pale skin since there is less of a contrast between the your light hair and fair skin, your hair will look a little bit thicker than if you had darker hair.
My previous post explains this more thoroughly.
Though, if you were to totally shave your head bald and you have pale skin these darker features and stark contrasts would actually help you accentuate that clear, smooth pale skin.
However, with the above being said, most men still would look much healthier, especially the fairer skinned men among us, with a little healthier skin tone and this could include a tan.
In fact, most men actually look better with a tan than without. But you may be an exception to the rule.
Spray tan for men, a good option?
There are many self tanners/bronzers that come as a lotion, cream and even as a mousse.
However, there are a few that come as a spray tan for men.
Actually, there are a couple of different spray types that you may be more interested in.
For example, if you’re looking for just a single bottle application, then there are some excellent single bottle spray tans for men meaning no effeminate packaging..
But, those who prefer and all over tan, then there are actually spray on tan machines that can give you an all over spray tan. Some of these are quite intricate and you can literally set one up in your room.
They come complete with portable plastic “insta-booth”, spray tanning gun, everything you’ll need for a fast, great looking tan with no mess.
Some are so portable, you can even take them with you out on the road and set up a tanning booth right inside your own hotel room or airbnb.
Can you put a self tanner on your scalp?
Absolutely! That’s what this post is mostly about. You definitely can put on a self tanner on your scalp. When you think about it, your scalp is just another part of your skin.
However, you may have just recently shaved it or have been shaving it for quite a while and almost think of it like a separate body part.
Your scalp is basically an extension of your forehead and face in general. So your bald scalp can definitely benefit from having a great self tanner applied to it.
Do you have to shave before or after getting a spray tan or fake tanning?
Guys can definitely shave before or after getting a spray tan. However, for the best and most thorough coverage of a spray tan, it is recommended that you do shave.
Although, shaving is not necessary if you want to apply a spray tan to your skin.
Many of us, especially nowadays, are covered with facial stubble or grow beards. Even if you have just stubble, you don’t necessarily need to shave.
However, if your stubble is quite thick or you do have a beard, it might be a good idea to avoid applying any spray tan to it.
If your self tanner is a cream, lotion or better yet a mousse, then the same applies. You don’t necessarily have to shave before getting or using a fake tanner.
Although, if you do have a beard and you do not want to take a chance on any type of discoloration, then I would avoid using any self tanner or bronzer whether that’s a spray, cream, lotion or mousse on your beard.
Can guys spray tan with hairy legs?
Guys with hairy legs can definitely get a spray tan. If you think about it, if spray tans work on most people, men and women, despite the fact both have hair on their forearms of varying degrees of thickness and still work, so why not your legs?
However, if you’re concerned about extra coverage, then I would use self tanning gloves to rub the self tanner onto your legs to ensure that the self-tanner reaches the skin where the hair is covering it.
Don’t worry about the self-tanner changing your hair color, since it normally doesn’t affect the hair color, especially even if you have thick hairy legs.
This is due to the hair on your legs as well as your forearms is usually sparse enough, so it wouldn’t even be noticeable.
Are self tanners bad for your skin?
Self tanners are not bad for your skin. As a matter of fact, self tanners can actually be quite good for your skin.
The best and highest quality self tanners contain vitamins and minerals as well as all natural ingredients that not only help give you a great self tan, but also nourish and protect the skin just like any good skin lotion does. Some self tanners even contain sunblock and SPF.
However, if your self tanner doesn’t contain sunblock, then applying sunblock afterwards is usually a good idea.
In fact, my favorite self-tanner doesn’t contain sunblock. But, this also gives me an opportunity to use a matte skin lotion or a shine reducer after the self tanner has dried.
These come with an SPF factor which helps keep the shine off my head while giving me great SPF, sunblock protection for my shaved head, making it look much better and healthier at the same time.
How do you apply self tanner without streaks?
To apply a self tanner without streaks, it’s necessary that you make sure to get an even application. This is quite easy to do.
In fact, I would also advise that you get a pair of self tanning application gloves along with your self tanner. This will help ensure that not only the self tanner doesn’t get on your palms and fingers, but it also helps you apply the self-tanner nice and evenly at the same time.
When applying the self tanner do so sparingly, don’t use heaps and gobs of it. This will help ensure a nice even layer of the self tanner/bronzer on your skin.
This will also help prevent streaks from appearing and save you a little money in the process from preventing an over application of the self tanner.
Can you get a tan in the shade?
Yes, you can get a tan in the shade. In fact, that’s one of the other benefits of self tanning. You can apply it before you even walk outside the door.
The great thing about self tanners and bronzers is that they work their magic on your skin without any help from the sun.
Does sunscreen ruin a fake tan?
Actually no. Sunscreen does not ruin a fake tan. In fact, many self tanners and bronzers contain SPF, i.e. sunscreen.
Actually, if your self tanner or bronzer doesn’t contain an SPF for sunscreen, then my advice would be to apply afterwards.
However, you should also wait until the self-tanner or bronzer has had enough time to dry before applying sunscreen.
Make sure to read the instructions and that you allow enough time for your self tanner or bronzer to work its magic and dry before applying. Many men who are looking to avoid a shiny bald head use a matte lotion or shine reducer after applying the self tanner.
This will make your skin look smooth but not oily.
Many of these skin matte lotions or shine reducers contain an SPF sunscreen in them. So, if your self tanner or self bronzer does not contain an SPF or sunscreen then you’re matte skin lotion or shine reducer should.
However, if you are into the shiny bald head look, there are also lotions that can also give you the shiny bald head you’re after.
Will tanning give me wrinkles?
Regular tanning either through a tanning machine or out in the sun itself without proper protection, can over time, give you wrinkles.
Even with the best sun protection you still may get premature wrinkles, if you are over exposed to the sun or overusing an indoor tanning machine.
However, if you use a self tanner or bronzer, you can avoid all that risk while nourishing and protecting your skin at the same time.
Does spray tanning give you wrinkles?
Spray tanning does not give you wrinkles. In fact, if you use a high quality spray on tan, it can actually help nourish and protect your skin, keeping it moisturized while giving it a healthy glow and color in the form of a tan at the same time.
However, to achieve this you must remember to only get the highest quality, all natural self tanner or bronzer. This is not something you want to scrimp on.
Self tanners and bronzers for men who you shave their heads, conclusions.
As you can see, self tanners and bronzers are a great way for men who shave their heads, get that elusive tan and great skin color. A healthy tan will make you look more athletic and give your skin that extra glow.
Self tanners are also great because they will save your skin from the ravages of the sun. No more will you need to lay out and waste hours burning yourself out in the sun.
Just spending a few minutes before you leave the door in the morning, will give you the color that you would potentially receive from spending a week in the Caribbean.
Self tanners also great because they nourish as well as protect and moisturize your skin, all at the same time.
The money, the time, the elimination of risk due to overexposure to the sun and premature wrinkling make self tanning and self tanners/bronzers worth it.
These should be a part of your grooming regimen, especially if you’re a fair skinned bald man.
Check them out for yourself and see how fast self tanners and bronzers can help you accentuate your shaved head as well.
