How to thicken thinning hair.

If you have thinning hair and aren’t quite ready to take the plunge and shave your head, then there are ways to thicken your thinning hair. None of them are miracles of course and eventually you may have to come to that crossroads many balding men come to. “To shave your head or not to shave your head”, that is the question that you will one day face.

But until that day let’s go over some common questions about thickening thinning hair and the options you have for thickening it.

How to make hair thicker and fuller naturally for men.

If you’re a man experiencing thinning hair and you want to make the most out of what you still have left to buy yourself some time to get used to your state of male pattern baldness, there are ways for you to make your hair thicker and fuller naturally.

Now, the word naturally has different meanings for different people. However, I want to explore and leave no stone unturned in your quest to thicken and make your hair look full.

This will include a regimen of not only proper grooming and keeping your hair and more importantly your scalp, pores and follicles clean, but will keep the bacteria at bay, which can cause ingrown hairs and and and not allow your hair to grow as thick as natural as possible.

This requires you to use shampoos, conditioners as well as exfoliating to make sure your scalp and hair follicles are kept clean.

You see, when your follicles start to clog, not only do ingrown hairs form, but your hair will not grow out as thick and full as it should naturally. If your hair follicles are clean and free of debris, then we are talking fuller and thicker by slight percentages.

However, when you multiply those very slight percentages over the thousands of hair follicles you have on your head, it can make some difference in the thickness and health of your hair.

So keeping your head and scalp clean not only by using shampoo but also keeping your scalp clean and exfoliated, free of oil, bacteria and fungus that can all week havoc within those precious hair follicles as well.

That’s the first line of defence.

Now once they are growing as healthy as possible from the hair follicles, it’s time to take care of those precious strands of hair.

This is where you’ll want to use all natural shampoos, conditioners, serums and possibly hair treatment oils to fortify and strengthen those precious hairs you got.

Many of these shampoos, conditioners, etc. contain thickening agents like panthenol and keratin. Although most include more natural ingredients like biotin and other vitamins too.

However, it’s usually the keratin and panthenol that actually makes your hair thicker along with the biotin.

Of course, there are other, not natural products like minoxidil and propecia that are FDA approved, which can not only thicken the hair on your scalp, but regrow some of the hair that you’ve lost as well.

Can hair grow back after thinning?

Hair can grow back after thinning. There are a few ways to not only grow back some of your lost hair but also help prevent further thinning and balding as well.

The sooner you catch your thinning and baldness and if the faster you can react the better your chances of a successful outcome in growing back your thinning hair.

I’ll include at least some of the methods mentioned above but add all existing but include some more intensive measures like derma rolling, the use of minoxidil and propecia as well.

Outside of those three methods is also the use of PRP for hair loss. I have a post written about it here, “Propecia, Minoxidil, Derma Rollers and PRP for Hair Loss. Do they work?”, that you can read.

Short of these are more invasive medical solutions like hair transplantation surgery.

However, if you want a more cosmetic and less invasive alternative to hair transplantation and you don’t want to go under the knife, there are options like hair systems or toupees that you can check out.

However, short of getting a hair system or toupee, you can look into topical hair fillers called hair fibers.

You can use them by basically picking out the color closest to your own natural hair color and simply shaking the tiny keratin filaments over your thinning and balding areas.

These keratin fibers attach themselves to your thinning hair, thickening them. There are downsides of course.

First of all, they are not waterproof and if you find yourself in a wet situation, they could detach from your hair strands and run down your forehead, your neck, etc. looking like mascara streaks.

Now there are holding sprays specifically made to help keep these hair fibers in place that you should use to top off your styling.

The holding spray should help make those hair fibers more water-resistant and less prone to streaking.

But then again nothing is guaranteed.

Secondly, they may rub off onto your (or someone else’s) fingers and hands when touched. This could make for some embarrassing situations.

Short or long? What is the best haircut for fine, thin hair?

I know you may be tempted to try to grow out your thinning hair. The logic being and understandably so, that your longer hair may help cover over your thinning areas of your scalp.

Perhaps you are under the impression that your longer hair will distract and take away attention from the fact that you are thinning on top.

Short or long? What is the best haircut for fine, thin hair?
Short, is the best haircut for fine, thin hair.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but nothing draws attention to a thinning head of hair than long hair, except of course, the comb over.

Many men grow out their hair longer on one side or another and try to come it over their balding and thinning areas. Don’t be that guy.

Everybody knows a comb over when they see one. I know some come over have actually gotten a little fashionable lately. But don’t fall into that trap.

You’re not fooling anyone with a comb over. Long thin hair wrapped in a ponytail, or worse, a man bun, is not a good look.

However, the best haircut for men with fine thin hair is not long, but actually short. Keeping your hair closely cropped and cut short will lessen the contrast between your thinning areas of your scalp.

Also short haircuts can add texture when done correctly. The thing is, the thinner your hair and the more balding you are experiencing, the shorter your haircut should be. You may want to go all the way down to a buzz cut

In fact, buzz cuts are probably the best haircuts for men who have thinning hair. It takes away all the mystery.

Your thinning hair will no longer be the center of attention. Nothing creates more attention than a man who has thinning hair trying to hide it by growing it long or doing some kind of comb over etc.

By cutting your hair very short or shaving it, you will have taken away that attention. And that attention to your thinning head of hair guys is one of the major reasons for your anxiety and frustration.

So cut it short or get a buzz cut. If you really want to go all in and own your balding, just shave it off and own it.

How to thicken your thinning hair today.

Let’s run down the list of how you can thicken your thinning hair right now. The first thing you can do is cut it short.

There are many short hairstyles you can take inspiration from for thinning hair if you click this link. You can even do it yourself with a great pair of clippers or go to a barber or hair stylist. You can actually do both.

If the cut is simple enough then you may be able to replicate it on your own at home. Many clippers nowadays have preset sized clipper guards. Those preset sized clipper guards are preset to various lengths.

You can either use just one clipper guard for your head.

Or you can use a variety of clipper guards. For example, you may want to use a short clipper guard for the sides and back and use a longer clipper guard for the top etc.

Next you want to invest in some hair thickening shampoos and conditioners as well as hair thickening serums and possibly oils.

You may want to start on minoxidil and include derma rolling in with the minoxidil treatments.

I have a few posts on this web site about derma rolling for your scalp, this one in particular, “Derma Rollers for Balding. Does a derma roller really work for hair loss?”, should be of great help on how to do this.

But including a dermaroller with your minoxidil treatment can enhance the effects of minoxidil. If you want to go even further, you can get a prescription for propecia from your dermatologist.

Between propecia, minoxidil and derma rolling along with the hair thickening, shampoos, conditioners, serums and oils, those are probably the best ways to thicken your fine thin hair. From here you can either take one of two directions.

You can go down the road of artificial hair thickeners and hair systems. For example, you can start using topical hair fillers and fibers or you can go down the hair systems route and get yourself a wig.

You can also go down the surgical route and look into hair transplantation. I have some posts and that you can read like this one, “Is getting a hair transplant worth it? Read this before you do.”.

Whichever way you decide, you should know that you do have options to thicken your thinning hair. But as you can see that path gets more drastic the further down you go.

You can also decide not to bother with any of it and come to the reality that you do have male pattern baldness.

Look yourself in the mirror and accept it. Once you accept it you’ll feel a sense of calm and relief come over you. With the amount of bald icons in our society today, there’s no shame in male pattern baldness.

In fact, once you accept your male pattern baldness you can now embrace it and shave your head.

This will free you of so much of the anxiety that you can now focus that energy on improving other parts of your life including your appearance, your lifestyle etc.

You too can become that bald handsome man that nature has meant for you to be.
